Blue Moon by Susan Solomon

The hour of the blue moon approached. Under the black summer sky, the he-gull rested on his mosaic-covered balcony, the balcony he had covered with hundreds of mirrored tesserae. As he waited for the moonrise, the he-gull caught a glimpse of light across the courtyard in the townhouse that had been vacant and dark for many seasons.
A she-gull appeared on her balcony. Her favorite pastime was flying through the city, looking at its many public mosaics. The she-gull looked up into the night, a tiny glass bottle in her beak. The he-gull watched, fascinated, as the she-gull painted her nails a light metallic blue. He realized he was staring, and so he looked away.
And in that second, the she-gull noticed, just on the edge of her awareness, 100 full moons reflected in the tiny mirror tiles on her neighbor’s terrace. The he-gull now felt her focused gaze. He turned toward it. She looked up and into his eyes. They knew something that night.
